In exchange we get higher taxes that may of us cannot afford. Very few of us have access to public transportation and drive many miles to work and shopping. Most of us cannot afford high-cost electric vehicles. Additionally the environmental impact of used lithium batteries and the inhumane mining practices for same do not seem to matter to concerned environmentalists.

It is not feasible for the State of Maine to drive electric cars - not affordable cars for the middle class and poor, slow and unreliable operation in the cold, let alone the snow. No chargers available. Governor Mills should know better being from Farmington. Raising the gas tax will just make it harder on the already tax burdened State of Maine. |

Over time this plan proposes to move Virginia from simple rationing and new taxes to the ultimate prohibition of fossil fuels.
We also find the push for electric vehicles a joke, because were do people think electricity comes from? It is another step to process and create electricity. Fossil Fuels is a nature substance found in the ground.

In the 2014 referendum to repeal the legislature-imposed gas tax increase, the voters overwhelmingly said NO! by a margin of 53-47. For once, take NO for an answer and stop coming back to pick our pockets, especially under the guise of a "climate change initiative," which is just horse hockey. It's pure hubris to think that humankind can effect climate one way or the other. Climate changes. It always has and always will, regardless of what humankind does or doesn't do.

I believe we need much more public transportation and affordable housing near transportation.
I am 69 years old and intend to give up my car within the next three years. I am doing this for two reasons: first, so that my daughters don't have the difficult task of taking it away at some point in the future, and secondly because I feel that it is the least I can do, as one person, to address our current climate crisis.
Because I am also a low-income senior, relying primarily on monthly Social Security income, it is proving to be difficult to find a place to live that is walkable and close to reliable public transportation and that I can afford.
It would be wonderful if the states in this coalition will address, and eventually solve, these problems. Thank you. |

Thank you.

I am very worried about climate change. I see the effects all around me, and it has been so discouraging how little is being done at the national level to address this growing crisis.
That said, I am very encouraged by the development of the Transportation and Climate Initiative. Please make sure carbon is priced high enough to effectively reduce emissions. It's also important that this policy doesn't disproportionately hurt rural and low or moderate income people.
Thank you for taking my comment, and big props to the bipartisan nature of this project!
Sincerely,

With accelerating climate change/warming of the earth, we urgently need to cap and reduce carbon emissions from the combustion of transportation fuels. This might be done through a cap-and-invest program as the TCI has suggest, or through other pricing mechanism. This needs to be be done in the context of an aggressive, health and conservation focused policy approach that is developed, adopted and implemented as soon as can be managed. Our future depends on this. This should be a top priority of our local, state and federal government. |

How can anyone think otherwise. Duh! As one measure, I would like to see government begin raising—by a large margin—the costs of fossil fuels over a period of years as advocated in the attached letter published this past September by the Ithaca Journal (NY) by my friend, Richard "Dick" Booth. Dick is an environmental lawyer who teaches in Cornell University’s Department of City and Regional Planning. In recommending this, I recognize that doing this will not be easy—particularly for low income, margin households, but it needs to somehow begun ASAP and with some sort of accommodations for households that will mitigate, or soften, the impact on them. |
