This state in in financial disaster with the recent state pension news They do not use tax dollars wisely, look at roads and bridges that have been funded thru gas and excise taxes. They raise taxes to give themselves raises. The U.S. is not responsible for climate change, it has been changing since beginning of time. Plant trees if you think there is a problem, they clean the air.

Sunni of NH is correct when he describes this initiative as a boondoggle. It will have little to no effect on emissions and will impose an undue financial burden upon everyone by increasing the cost of everything. Everything moves by truck at some point in time. The increase in fuel will be passed on to consumers. Will it reduce the usage of fuel? I think not. People will still require goods and services, will still need to get to work and school, etc. Add to this the fact that it will be imposed upon us by government fiat without a vote by either citizens or legislative bodies it becomes intolerably insulting and horribly undemocratic. Isn't this one of the reasons we decided to separate from England? Given the history of government's inability to utilize our money wisely, this will undoubtedly result in just another immense, wasteful bureaucracy that will have a negligible affect on the environment. Just another power/money grab. |

It is an investment in the future. Programs like this are needed to slow climate change to allow up to adapt and invent better ways to slow the ever-increasing amount of GHGs. The future costs will be high and will be born not just by us but even more so by our children. Future costs include rising food prices as farms have to adapt to changing weather and temperature, insurance costs as the payouts rise due to more severe weather and flooding, new dikes and roads due to rising sea levels, etc.
Here is the definition of “The tragedy of the commons”: The tragedy of the commons is a situation in a shared-resource system where individual users, acting independently according to their own self-interest, behave contrary to the common good of all users by depleting or spoiling the shared resource through their collective action.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons
In this case the shared resource is a stable atmospheric chemistry, we all are adding to GHG deficit that we and our children will eventually have to pay back. The longer we wait, the more it is going to cost.
Acting now will save lives and money in the future.

To service our customers we average about 200k miles per year on our fleet of vehicles. Maine is already at a competitive disadvantage due to our geographical make-up, high cost of electricity and one of the highest overall tax rates in the Union.
We have limited public transportation which require most folks from Maine to commute via vehicle to and from work. In addition, we have to rely on our vehicles to purchase groceries, visit local clothing stores, transport our children to school events, etc.. This list goes on and on. We can not simply park our vehicles and chose another mode of transportation.
To include Maine in this initiative will be catastrophic to our economy. As a business owner I will be forced to pass this cost on to my Customers. They in turn will have less disposable income to fuel the economy in Maine. I cannot speak to how this will impact other states, but I suspect outside of the large cities (Which already have large participation rates in public transportation) the rural areas will be in a similar situation as many of us in Maine.
I hope common sense will prevail. |

The lack of vehicles is not because no one wants the vehicles or because the manufacturers do not want to produce them, but because the battery technology is still immature and the supply chains for mass-produced batteries and rare earth permanent magnets is early stage development. The cost-benefit for consumers even with tax incentives is not there because the vehicles are more expensive for less capability. All major manufacturers have announced $300 billion in electric vehicle manufacturing investments over the next few years with large scale production starting in 2021. That said it will take until 2030 for mass production to be fully realized. Consumers and businesses with a new ICE technology vehicle are not going to run out and buy a new electric car until their current ICE vehicle reaches its end of useful service (8-10 years). At that point consumers will have a choice and will make the choice based on the advantages of the future EV's, not because of TCI. TCI does not help us move forward only adds consumer costs. TCI does nothing to solve that and all rigorous studies show that it does not reduce hydrocarbon consumption, does nothing to enhance transportation sector electrification and adds no funding for desperately needed highway repairs.

Hurting people to affect their behavior is not the role for government. Unless you're the former mayor of New York, and running for president.
Michael Bloomberg: “Some people say, well, taxes are regressive. But in this case, yes they are. That's the good thing about them because the problem is in people that don't have a lot of money. And so, higher taxes should have a bigger impact on their behavior and how they deal with themselves." This is immoral and un-American. As is taxation without representation (i.e. the method this is being imposed upon the people, as opposed to a tax voted upon by duly elected representatives). |

Twelve thousand years ago North Africa including Egypt was lush with vegetation and rainfall. The populations at that time were tiny compared to modern day.
