Having transportation with fewer or zero carbon emissions is imperative. In order to benefit everyone, that transportation needs to be equitable. When one segment of our population is suffering, we all suffer the consequences. For too long we have lacked empathy & been self-focused & profit-driven in this country. It's time to create a sustainable lifestyle for everyone and demonstrate to the world that we have the moral courage to do so. We cannot expect to be a world leader in the global economy when our own country is so divided and inequitable. |

Community design should be walking and bicycling friendly. HEALTHY community includes neighborhood schools where children can walk or bicycle to school. HEALTHY communities need village centers where people can access jobs, services, medical care and entertainment. HEALTHY communities provide alternative multimodal Greenways, Blueways, and activities to breakdown barriers and build bridges between communities.
Promote CAR FREE days. Provide incentives for TAKE TRANSIT. BIKE TO WORK DAY during BIKE MONTH.
Note: Electric cars are dangerous for cyclists because they can not be heard. It is better to encourage other programs to eliminate (at least reduce) transportation congestion and medigate air quality. Community design and walking and bicycling would make a huge difference.
Thank you for listening,

Recognizing that marginalized people often bear the brunt of consequences created by our fossil fuel dependence, all planning must include just transition initiatives that benefit those of less economic resources and power. |

Yes, the heating of the planet will rise exponentially in the near future, but we have to do what we can now to mitigate and adapt to the assault on the earth's environment and peoples. We also must prepare for a different future for our children and grandchildren then we have lived. GHG's are 40% of the problem and are best dealt with now in a vigorous way. We have waited too long to deal with fossil fuels and programs like TCI are part of the first steps for taking the challenge to mitigate the consequences of our industrial age. And Remember we also have to treat our forests and soils differently. It will take more time to increase the health and sequestration of our working and natural lands, but we need to start now. You followed the science well for the pandemic and the science will be a good guide for Climate Change. Sincerely yours, Carl Bayer |

Decarbonization of the transportation sector is a vital endeavor. Unfortunately efforts are uniformly targeted at highway vehicles and railroad electrification is consistently ignored. It is proven technology, in widespread use worldwide except in North America. Billions are being spent to develop electric delivery vans, trash trucks, and school buses, all of which operate very limited miles and hours daily. Meanwhile diesel locomotives by the thousands operate tens of thousands of miles across America every day. This is the proverbial low-hanging fruit. Rail is already about four times more energy efficient than over-the-road trucking. Less fuel consumed means less pollution created, lowered greenhouse gas emissions, and less impact on climate change. It follows that as much surface freight transportation should move by rail as possible. Carrying the trucks on trains instead of driving each one is where the real benefit lies. Electrification has the potential to double rail's advantage. It's time to go there. It's shovel ready! |
