Support for electric vehicles in the northeast continues to grow, and states participating in the Northeast Electric Vehicle Network are forging ahead with preparations for the mass market arrival of plug-in cars and trucks and the economic and environmental benefits that these vehicles can deliver.

On behalf of the Transportation and Climate Initiative, Dr. James Winebrake recently conducted an analysis of all freight moving through the northeastern United States.

Private- and public-sector organizations from across the country, including General Motors, Tesla, Coca-Cola, and Northeast Utilities, gathered with representatives from northeast states and clean cities coalitions recently to discuss ways to expedite the deployment of electric vehicles. 

More than 80 media sources ran a story last week about the launch of the Northeast Electric Vehicle Network due, in part, to an Associated Press piece that helped break the news.  The story was picked up by News Day, Business Week, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and the Boston Globe to name a few.

Transportation, energy and environment officials from ten northeast states and the District of Columbia announced the formation of the Northeast Electric Vehicle Network on Wednesday. The Network will work to bolster economic growth, maintain the region’s leadership in the clean energy economy and reduce the area’s dependence on oil and its emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.

Transportation, environment and energy agency heads from 12 Northeast and Mid-Atlantic jurisdictions released an Agreement to Support Sustainable Communities on June 8, 2011.
