Transportation pollution also constitutes an immediate public health hazard in the form of particulate air pollution. I request that Massachusetts formally join this initiative to develop a clear and aggressive plan to reduce transportation emissions.
Furthermore I ask that the initiative's policies advance social and health equity by prioritizing clean transportation investments in communities that are overburdened by pollution and/or don't have access to clean transportation options.
At a time when America's federal government is incapable of addressing the nation's problems, including transportation pollution and equity, I am grateful that the leadership of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states is taking bipartisan, common-sense action to demonstrate transportation and climate leadership where the federal government cannot. I and your other constituents are putting our faith in you to find just means of addressing this existential threat to the future of our region, our nation, and our planet. |

Massachusetts should join this regional effort.to reduce transportation emissions.
Such a coalition needs to address the chronic environmental justice communities and ensure their burden is lifted.
Thank you for developing this bipartisan effort to move us forward. |

Traffic congestion from millions of cars and trucks are polluting our lungs and planet more than ever before. But as we enter this new decade, we have an opportunity modernize how we get from point A to point B.
We need to move quickly to address transportation emissions & shift to a cleaner transportation model if we are to have a prayer of averting the most catastrophic effects of the climate crisis. We need clean, high speed rail services to be expanded & we need ready access to charging stations for electric vehicles, support for cleaner alternative fuels & support for those among us who simply cannot afford hybrids or plug-in vehicles. Massachusetts needs to join this effort & work aggressively toward our goal of a cleaner transportation grid. |

Transportation is responsible for 40% of our carbon emissions in the Northeast. Therefore, I request that Massachusetts formally join the plan to reduce emissions in the transportation sector thereby showing a strong commitment to be a leader in fighting global warming. We need investments in clean public transportation, new technologies such as electric cars, trucks, buses, trains and ferries, and a cap and invest policy to incentivize industry to move away from the polluting of our air and water and the warming of our atmosphere caused by CO2 emissions.
Furthermore, I urge you to make sure that any policy formulated will have a strong component of equity by prioritizing CLEAN investments in areas overburdened by pollution as well as prioritizing protection and inclusion for those who do not have access.
I commend the bipartisan nature of this project, with both parties taking the initiative to move us forward on a local basis as a region while the federal government proceeds in the opposite direction with more harvesting, transporting and burning of fossil fuels, including coal, oil, nuclear and gas. We need to do this and we can, with or without federal cooperation and support. |

We need to get under control the amount of carbon emissions especially in this very populated Northeast quadrant of our country. If this includes a gas tax hike, so be it! The costs of NOT supporting such a proposal will far outweigh any costs of implementing it over the long run. The continued development of, and access to public transportation in a city such as Boston where the roads always seem to be jam-packed is crucial to the health of our city and metropolitan area and its inhabitants. Getting neighboring states on board will also be invaluable in this age of increasing mobility. I heartily support this effort!! |

TCI, like the successful RGGI program, will provide crucial support for achieving these goals. I hope and expect that TCI will provide much needed resources for initiatives such as accelerating electrification of transportation, including EV's, buses, and regional rail, as well improving roads, sidewalks and trails for pedestrians, e-bikers and ordinary bikers, and accelerating new approaches such as bus rapid transit and improved last-mile access to commuter rail stations, including secure bike parking, more parking spots for cars, and shuttle services.
Current fiscal policies require that commuter rail passengers pay an extraordinary share of the cost of operating the Boston area transportation system, with fares increasing far more than gas taxes, and commuter rail fares increasing far beyond other types of mass transit. TCI represents an opportunity to both bring in new dollars for strategic improvements, and to also make the allocation more fair, between commuter rail users and drivers, and also between commuter rail and other forms of mass transit. |
