We need the improved health that cleaner air and water will bring. We need the improved quality of life that quieter streets will bring. Most importantly, we need the reduction of global warming that using much less fossil fuel for transportation can bring.
Only a major shift can bring the degree of change necessary. I urge you to develop more rapid transit, and make it powered electrically, so green energy can be the source, not fossil fuels. The amount of wind and solar power generation must be increased rapidly, along with the distribution system to move the power to where it's needed. The distributed nature of renewable sources means some of the generation will be nearer the suburban and rural places where it is used, which should improve the reliability of the power grid and lower overall cost.
I urge more charging locations be built for electric street vehicles. I urge electrifying all rail operations in the region, with the possible exception of branch lines with less than one train a day. Electric railways have been practical for a century or more. We dismantled some electrical rail systems in the Rocky Mountains, instead of adding more miles to them. Diesel locomotives seemed the cheaper, more flexible choice, but have helped bring us to the current, unsustainable situation we are in. It's time our transportation systems were modernized to be as good or better than the Europeans' and Japanese'!
Thank you |

• Homes and businesses using 100% renewable energy such as solar panels and windmills. These homes and businesses would have charging stations to charge up cars, trucks and vans for residents and customers. I have been and will continue looking to start a
community here in Merrimack County where everyone has very insulated homes and use solar panels.
• More job training for the green new deal jobs

But a regional plan that reaches all the way to Virginia makes a lot of sense, and we would be foolish not to take advantage of the market power of such a large populous area to reduce emissions. The climate crisis is the number one threat to the future of all residents of Vermont and the planet. The near term costs of economic transition will be a good investment in the future of our energy infrastructure. |

Our population decline demonstrates that clearly. Mismanagement of the state pension fund has precipitated an ill conceived freeze of paid for COLA's to those already retired precipitating a decline a normal sources of modest income to the state economy while union cronies of the governor got consecutive pay raises for four years from the General fund that was not financed. What is going on in this poorly managed state? Political ambition and throwing the most vulnerable under the bus. Tell the General Assembly that the Point Judith fund purchase by the state pension fund should be cancelled immediately on the grounds that such commitments can be cancelled fro a "reasonable public purposes" and mandate the state sports betting contract be rebid competitively to stop financing crony jobs while the state fails its fiduciary obligation to balance its budget and finance its pension fund to long term retirees, all from the proceeds of this sports betting venture. The TCI nonsense must be eliminated now as membership in the regional group that came up with this foolishness has never redounded to the benefit of RI. We need a new pipeline of natural gas to get cheap Marcellus Shale gas and tell Governor Cuomo that NY is restraining trade to access the shale gas, costing RI billions of annual dollars every year, preventing the state from becoming a port to export this gas also overseas. This proposal feed the anachronistic and radical environmental thinking the Governor and some members of the General Assembly are advancing. Stop this travesty now. Revive the state economy by rejecting the TCI and adopting the policies suggest herein now. |

The United States has one of the toughest environmental laws around its the other countries that do not. Raising fuel prices will raise everything else (food, clothing,Medicine, ETC,ETC ). if it cost more to make it and deliver it called trickle down economics. The only ones who suffer is the American people. Janet Mills should have never became governor because she already put Maine back in the RED blew all the rainy day funds and thinks she is doing what she thinks is the best for Maine, the only thing that is best for Maine is that she is removed from office |

I seem to recall our planet has gone through ice ages and meltings throughout our planet's existence. Get our basic infrastructure and water up to par, then we can consider fixing climate. Besides as science reveals, "our environment is cleaner today than it was since the 1950s." TCI is just another name for increasing gas taxes for working Americans. |

While your at it why don't you stop spending so much money on people who are capable of working but come to this country for a handout....and definitely lets make this whole state a sancutary state because that works so well...... |

In addition to the health impacts associated with rising temperatures, soot and ground-level ozone from the region’s cars
and trucks are responsible for more than 50,000 asthma attacks, 1,000 deaths, and other pollution-related illnesses that incur approximately $27 billion in total health care costs every year. The health impacts of transportation affect all of us, but especially vulnerable are children, the elderly, the chronically ill, and people in low-income communities. Our transportation system is also expensive. More than
15 percent of US household income goes toward purchasing, fueling, and maintaining personal vehicles, making it the second-largest household expense behind housing. What we need and can achieve is a transportation system in which a shared network of electric vehicles, working in concert with a first-class public transportation system, gets everybody where they need to go without burning a gallon of gasoline or wasting time in traffic. A transportation system that doesn’t contribute to air pollution or climate change, and isn’t vulnerable to the volatile swings of oil prices. It will require cooperation between local, state, regional, and federal governments, and between government and the private sector. And most importantly, it will require policy leaders to identify and prioritize new sources of funding for clean transportation priorities. If everyone works together, it can be achieved. Some may need to make sacrifices and that is never easy. |

The only thing that reliably changes people's behavior in this country is financial incentive. It is actually a very capitalistic and Republican manner of achieving results without the government deciding how it gets done.
TCI does not go far enough to cut carbon quickly, but it is a very important step that can be taken without major economic upheaval. We have endured gas price increases much more drastic than TCI would cause during prior gas shortages or panics. We paid up to $4/gallon not that long ago. When we did, people bought smaller cars and carpooled and used public transit or stayed home more. They had to. That is a price that we should pay now, and use the funds generated to help people who can least afford the price increases to change their mode of transportation and decrease their heating fuel needs. Upgrading vehicles and weatherization for those least able to pay will give them long term economic benefits from the price increases and help VT and the world achieve the needed decrease in fossil fuel use.
If we do not pay the small price now, the cost in disaster mitigation will dwarf the cost of TCI. Even though we are a small portion of worldwide CO2 emissions, Vermont must do its part. Every single portion counts. If we do not do it, everyone may not do it. We all must pay a price for the excesses of the last century or pay a much bigger price later. Delaying aggressive action is like obtaining an extremely high interest loan--it will come due and we will pay for it.
Please approve joining into the Transportation Climate Initiative now.
Thank you,

I strongly support the Transportation and Climate Initiative. In particular, I am pleased with the wording "other pricing mechanism" because I stand in support of a carbon-fee-and-dividend approach to reducing carbon emissions. Whatever pricing mechanism is implemented, I am happy to see Pennsylvania moving toward a lower-carbon-emissions future.
In the "putting your money where your mouth is" department, my husband and I purchased a Prius Prime on January 2. In 7-1/2 weeks, it has been driven over 1100 miles, used 8.5 gallons of gas, and thus has averaged 129 mpg so far. We charge it overnight, and our electricity is 100% wind generated.
We can all do better, and I am in full support of Pennsylvania being part of the Transportation and Climate Initiative to achieve a cleaner and more sustainable climate future for us all. |
