We have the worst public transit system. It barely covers half the state, what about the rural sectors? Enough is enough. Start taking the cars away from city employees that use them for personal use after hours that will save money and fuel! |

We need to get more cars off our roads to help reduce carbon emissions. Convenient and reliable public transportation is needed to help our citizens who cannot afford or have problems maintaining a personal vehicle. I have recently downsized to one vehicle for our household and would use public transportation more if it was convenient. Let's reduce the number of cars on our highways to help with climate change and the stress that congestion brings to our citizens. |

Many patients at the Pawtucket, RI, medical clinic where I work miss important appointments because of transportation limitations. Pedestrian and bicycle options are poor in Pawtucket--people feel unsafe walking in areas with no pedestrian crosswalks, lights, or lights that do not work. If more of our patients could walk or bike to work, school, their clinic, or the grocery store, we would undoubtedly see improvements in markers of chronic noncommunicable disease (e.g. obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, etc.). Additionally, if public transportation options were improved, many of our patients' daily stress levels would be reduced: their work commute times could be lowered and they could accomplish essential tasks more easily and cheaply. If public transportation options were increased while simultaneously lowering average vehicle emissions, one would also anticipate significantly lower rates of asthma, a condition which has direct relationship to exhaust particulate matter (in fact, the likelihood of an asthma-related pediatric emergency department visit tracks closely to house proximity to major highways in RI). More, better, and greener transportation options would create a healthier Rhode Island. |

Please take all the action that you can to protect our earth. Our economy is far less important than our climate. Public transit investments that could be made with TCI proceeds would be valuable.
Please choose the aggressive greenhouse gas reduction target that the most recent climate science tells us we need.
Please do all that you can to stop the cracker plants that will cause pollution to make plastic that we can't even get rid of. Leave it in the ground. |

We drive long distances just to get to essential services here in the western mountains. We require powerful 4 wheel drive vehicles to get around in the winter. Electric cars are just NOT THE ANSWER! It is bad for Maine - and all the other states involved. I cannot afford a new car that is battery powered. This is not something Maine's Governor should be doing to us taxpayers. Stop this nonsense now! And what about the fossil fuel used to make the batteries, to recycle the batteries, and the carbon fuel - electricity - to charge the batteries, and to build these cars???? Charge the extra taxes to the people buying these cars .... |

In Maryland’s case, TCI would hurt the poor rural Maryland residents who depend on cars more than the wealthy residents of D.C. suburbs with plenty of public transit options.
Furthermore, TCI revenue would fund programs that would benefit the rich, such as programs to build more electric vehicle stations. But since electric cars cost up to $22,000 more than gasoline cars, over 80 percent of Maryland’s EV owners are affluent individuals with household incomes over $100,000.
Asides from the problem of fairness, I do not believe that TCI is the most effect way to fight climate change. TCI’s own estimates show that it would yield just a 5 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2032. Another study shows that TCI would result in a maximum temperature reduction of just 0.25 degrees by year 2100.
Therefore, I ask that our leaders carefully reconsider the TCI and weigh its huge economic costs against meager environmental benefits. Thank you for considering my viewpoint. |

Since I do not own a vehicle, I am dependent on others to drive me to other towns to shop, attend events, and visit friends and relatives. Because I now live on a fixed income, purchasing and maintaining a vehicle would be prohibitively expensive for me. I lived for years in Chicago, and am used to taking easily accessible and inexpensive public transit. Because I was able to use public transit, I did not add to air pollution by driving myself everywhere, and it bothers me that I am contributing to it here in my home state. |

A scientist by training I understand hard limits and the damage resulting from a spiraling negative feedback loop. If repairs are not going to be made by regulatory fiat, and a market solution is more palatable to get the job done-then build the system to make it happen. Short term thinking is what got humanity here in the first place- choosing comfort, convenience and cheap over building century stable systems which require effort. Humans are not evolved to be good at long term planning. Like safety protocols LT planning requires training and reinforcement.
What feels like small actions by individuals aggregate into horde of people which has big impacts. I place "the everything is fine as long as I get mine" and "why worry, it hasn't happened before" crowd into the category of homeowners who refuse to budge for hurricane evacuations until its too late, panic and jam the roads, or need to be asked to write their social security numbers on their arms so the bodies can be identified after the storm surge.
Commenters outraged at paying any taxes should work harder at getting your government to stop blowing billions of dollars on needless wars and hundreds of millions on Trumps golf outings. Try and remember taxes should pay for bridges that stay up, usable transportation and the social infrastructure of civilized society. Good government does not come for free. Ignorance, bad data and ideas repeatedly proven wrong that won't stay dead, well, those are free but still manage to end up costing everyone.

Now is the time for the region to take bold action to mitigate climate change and roll back emissions. The Transportation and Climate Initiative has potential to become the sixth largest economy in the world. This is not an opportunity we can pass up. While it's not legislation yet, it will have a huge impact on Connecticut's efforts to combat climate change and move our state into a modern, green economy. |

TCI is a once in a generation opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and re-invest funds to much needed transit improvements, including safe and reliable public transportation, electric vehicle infrastructure, and "Complete Streets" for bikers and pedestrians. With the climate crisis well in hand as the most threatening and pressing issue facing all of us, I wish to urge the TCI leadership to choose the most aggressive greenhouse gas emissions cap. I also ask that a TCI policy has equity and investment in overburdened and under-served communities as a first and foremost priority.Unreliable transit is taking time residents should be spending at work or with their families. Those without choices have to drive and the resulting traffic congestion is further damaging our environment, public health, and quality of life.
In closing, I would also like to thank Gov. Lamont for being involved in the regional design process and request that Connecticut formally sign on to the initiative.
Thank you,
Carole Osborn
