Reducing vehicle emissions must be a priority for the sake of the health of area residents, particularly children (with developing respiratory systems), and many with health vulnerabilities. Virginia should formally join the regional initiative to reduce emissions and take direct action to invest in clean solutions to achieve reductions in areas that have high levels of pollution.
I am grateful that this regional bipartisan initiative is taking us forward to cleaner air, while the federal government is moving backwards.

It makes so much sense to me that we join forces with other states (following the example of REGGI) to make sure that we can make a serious impact on addressing the major contributor of our carbon footprint. No plan is perfect, but we mustn't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. At this critical juncture, without a plan at all, we would be signing away this planet's future. We need to fix our crumbling infrastructure, promote use of clean electric vehicles, upgrade our public infrastructure, reduce traffic congestion and clean the air of transportation-related pollution. I have lost employees who moved from (or would not commute through) Northern Virginia due to the terrible traffic. And there are no good EV charging options at or near where I live and work. I firmly believe that we have the will and the transportation solutions in hand. All we need now is the cap-and-invest proceeds to get the job done! I may be forced to move from Virginia if steps are not taken to fix our broken and dirty transportation system. |

Mainers in the northern 2/3 of the state must commute much farther distances to work or shop than any one of the other states in this initiative. Furthermore, the proposed taxes will place Maine businesses at an unacceptable disadvantage, as costs for transportation and energy already far exceed those of the rest of New England. If Governor Janet Mills continues down this road she will face massive opposition from the residents of Maine. There is nothing in this plan which will benefit the people she was elected to represent. |

Maine is a mostly rural state, where reliable, cost effective personal transportation is essential. Those of us who live in the rural areas do not have the advantages afforded to densely populated areas, such as walking distance amenities. Grocery stores, doctors, pharmacies and other necessities are a 20 minute or longer drive. We are dependent on affordable gas and heating fuel to live here. The TCI initiative will significantly raise prices for the consumer. Unfortunately, Governor Janet Mills seems unwilling to support the needs and wishes of Maine people. |

Maine’s estimated $.17 per gallon increase in gas price, as well as increase in heating oil price, and likely propane as well, will be a critical hardship on middle and low income people.There is no alternative for us.
“In the public debate surrounding this program, especially in the media, confusion exists over whether regulated entities will pass the costs of purchasing allowances onto consumers who buy motor fuels. To be 100% clear, and eliminate any confusion, these costs, and the costs necessary to comply with this program by regulated entities (these costs) *will be reflected in retail motor fuel prices that consumers pay*.” |
