As a young person, I am horrified at how little is being done to address the dire impacts of climate change which will so markedly impact our future. The science is irrefutably clear that we cannot wait another instant longer to act aggressively; higher prices for gas are an extremely small price to pay for the devastating economic and societal effects failure to act are already having. This at least starts to move the transportation sector in the right direction. |

The recitals about climate changes are conclusory and lack scientific foundation. Before considering MOU's such as this I recommend the TCI jurisdictions undertake some basic scientific investigation. Perhaps several panels of real scientists can be convened to debate the current circumstances of gradual global temperature rise and contrast the current rise with similar increases that have occurred since the last ice age (that continues to wind down).
Moreover, whatever a few jurisdictions in the United States undertake will not matter an iota relative to global emissions. We are effectively opting to make our marketplaces more expensive places to live and work with zero benefit aside from good feelings- -essentially self flagellation.
NY is already a high social overhead state that is driving established residents away- -please do not compound your bad economic policies with this disastrous proposal. |

I was pleased to see that many northeastern U.S. states including Vermont have signed a memorandum of understanding in regards to setting up a Transportation Climate Initiative marketplace.
As the world heats up, we have been falling further and further behind in reducing our carbon emissions. This, as you know, is definitely true of Vermont.
The new TCI can set a really solid structure to begin addressing carbon pollution in the transportation sector more aggressively, by raising new moneys through the cap and trade approach. This approach has worked well in other energy sectors with the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, so there's good reason to think it will work just as well in the transportation sector.
In this era when Vermont has limited ability to raise revenues, collaborating with so many other northeastern states in this approach makes eminent sense. I would like the parameters of the program to be as aggressive as possible so that we can begin making substantive progress reducing carbon in the transportation sector. Whether it be more fully funding electric school buses, or finding money for more electric vehicle charging stations, or incentivizing a hefty increase in purchase of electric vehicles, or other creative and innovative approaches, it's well past the time to really ramp up this type of work.
Thanks so much for your time.

Many of us live on fixed incomes and in areas where public transit is basicly non existant! An increase of another 5-17 cents per gallon with the increase in tax we are already paying would be difficult for many to deal with. The State of New Jersey seems to want to increase the costs of living here, with no attempt to help its residences, no help with property, no help with income tax, prescription prices, insurance cost for hard working citizens. Increasing the cost of living even more in NJ with no plan in place to help to decrease our other cost is ridiculous, but it is a typical NJ move by our politicians who only seem to care about looking good to the media and nothing about its citizens. I so wish I could move out of here!

Pennsylvania already has one of the highest fuel taxes in the nation. We have been throwing money at public transportation for decades with no added results. The problem is we citizens like our cars, adding another tax to pay for something that isn't fully used now is ridiculous, it is also already heavily subsidized with the current fuel taxes. If you're a politician that votes for this, don't expect to stay in office, this tax will hurt the average taxpayer and we remember. This idea sounds like the elites that have the largest carbon footprint, stating they buy credits to be carbon neutral, which makes no sense, since their actual footprint did not change. If they were serious about (or believed) this issue, they would just reduce their actual carbon footprint, basically do as I say, not as I do. |

How many scientific reports, grim news articles and shocking images will it take to jar people to change their daily habits and consumption patterns. I feel optimistic that people are becoming acutely aware of how dire the situation is, but feel that we need policy to drive change at the highest level.
I call on the Gov. Phil Scott of Vermont to agree to all terms of the TCI. |

Effective pricing models including public parking, rolling, gas taxes are a must. The revenue generated should then be immediately invested back in to infrastructure that promotes walking, cycling, and public transportation use. |

What I don't understand is why it has to be on the backs of rural people, like here in Vermont. We need our cars and pickup trucks to grocery shop, go to work, do charitable work, basically live. We didn't ask for this to be this way, it was ordained for us by the greed of the automotive industry and the gasoline/fuel oil industry and now we are stuck with it. Granted there are more vehicles going "green" but we are not there yet. To just start with a carbon tax will not only hurt the peoples pocket book, but will eventually hurt the Vt economy too and will not help the environment one bit. NO CARBON TAX. |

"Earmarks"? There is no such thing in this state, only the next black hole to pour our money into. Next, if it's such a great initiative, why are adjoining states fleeing from it like rats on a sinking ship? Third: Where will its appetite end? First, it's 17 cents, then a quarter, then...California here we come! If the state really wanted to affect climate change by enhancing public transportation, it would create a public transportation system that actually works consistently and efficiently, is accessible to citizens, and is reasonably priced. So far, every "initiative" has turned into a boondoggle...but a very lucrative one for the state's wallet. Please stop treating us as if we are so stupefied by letting you get away with your countless past indulgences that you think this is just another folder of b.s. you can slip under our door in the middle of the night. |
