We know that emissions from vehicles contribute heavily to the overall state of our environment. Reducing pollution from transportation is a key component to reducing Pennsylvania's emissions. I support the Transportation and Climate Initiative (TCI). Here are a few reasons why:
-Public transit investments that could be made with TCI proceeds would be valuable.
-It is the aggressive greenhouse gas reduction target that the most recent climate science tells us we need.
-It prioritizes clean investments in areas overburdened by pollution and/or for those who don’t have access to transportation choices.
-Too many of our public buses and trains run on dirty energy and contribute to air pollution and climate change. Many trains, buses, and stations haven’t been retrofitted in decades. For many people in rural parts of our states, there are zero viable public transportation options, which forces them to drive.
By making polluters pay and creating a dedicated source of funding through TCI, we’ll finally be able to move our state to a 21st-century regional transportation system that is cleaner, more reliable, more accessible, and more affordable. We’ll see less traffic, thousands of new jobs, and less dangerous air pollution. All communities — whether urban, suburban, or rural — will benefit.
Our air is making too many of us sick — and if history is a guide, it’s not going to get better on its own. We need to take bold and concerted action to reduce the carbon impact of our transportation system, and TCI’s combination of using pricing policies that discourage polluters and modernizing our public transportation system will do exactly that. |

As a native Californian, I have repeatedly experienced the increased congestion that inevitably follows road expansion. Let's learn from their experience and build our public transportation.
In addition, widening and building roads will removed huge numbers of trees that help to mitigate climate change. We should be planting trees instead of cutting them down. Let's get out of our cars and go public! |

I am requesting that the policy have a price high enough to effectively reduce emissions according to the latest science. Also that the policy have a strong component of social equity and doesn't hurt rural or low/moderate income people.
Thank you for the bipartisan nature of this project. |

Public transportation is often prohibitively expensive (trains, for example, are never a cost effective option; buses are often not viable as well); an affordable choice would certainly help people public options over cars.

In my own town of Kennebunk, I see tremendous opportunities for improved transportation. We have an old train station which, if reactivated, could bring tourism dollars to the community and could allow workers and students to commute to Portland or Boston and access the opportunities in those cities without the aggravation of driving personal vehicles. Other mass transit options such as buses or trolleys would also be welcome. In terms of individual vehicles, we own a plug-in Toyota Prius which is a delight to drive and competes with the best of the fossil-fuel powered vehicles. I wrote a grant a number of years ago to bring two electric vehicle charging stations to town, and I'm delighted to see the stations are in regular use by residents and tourists! I strongly support this initiative to improve Maine's transportation infrastructure in a way that helps address global climate change. |

I've lived in 3 less developed countries without a car, relying only on public transportation. These countries offered a variety of transportation, both small and large buses, subways, ferries and pedicabs. The fares were very reasonable. To own a car in these countries was always more expensive than using public transport. In Rockland we now have a bus with a sensible schedule that takes passengers on a route that begins at Walmart and continues to PenBay hospital. This is a good start. I believe a fleet of small electric buses would offer enormous flexibility, serve all ages, and would give the biggest bang for the buck. Small buses could also serve and connect rural communities. Yes, I would also love to see more trains, trams, safe bike lanes and pedestrian streets. Thank you for considering my comments.

it is a multi-state effort;
it would use the cap-and-invest version of carbon pricing to modernize our transportation system;
it could, if well designed and properly implemented, generate millions of dollars for public transit, bike paths, EV incentives and infrastructure.
TCI could help achieve a stronger economy, equity for low-income and rural Vermonters, and a reduction in carbon pollution.
Thank you for your attention. |
