My Honda Clarity hybrid just needed a mere 61 gals. of fuel for almost 13,000 miles driven in the first year we've owned it. However, I've recharged it almost exclusively at home, as no charging facilities are available where I work and shop. My husband, a federal worker, is prevented from recharging at work by this administration's rollback of permission granted by previous administrations to decrease the federal carbon footprint. I exulted when finding a charging site in Manchester, ME and Freeport, ME.
We need to address needs for transportation in urban and rural areas, especially for elders, with vans, trains and buses either solar- or electrically-powered. I bike whenever weather and routes allow, to avoid fossil fuels and road degradation while improving my health, but recognize the limited applicability of this mode for some demographics. Though while in Copenhagen and Stockholm I was impressed with the great hordes of bikers at rush hour, multi-level bike parking at train stations, and general bike cohort of all ages, attire and purpose. The book Bikenomics details the social, economic and environmental benefits in communities investing in infrastructure ("staples" for locking bikes when parked) and encouraging biking.
Whether bikes or trains or EVs or electric or solar vans, it's imperative to move people and products without adding Green House Gases. |

Increases in gross domestic product (GDP), disposable personal income (DPI) and employment;
Public health benefits from cleaner air valued at $3 billion - $10 billion; and
A 20-25% reduction in greenhouse gas pollution from cars and trucks.
The Vermont-specific benefits include:2
$18 to $80 million in annual revenues to invest in low-carbon transportation options;
More money from the program each year than Vermonters contribute; and
The opportunity to make the state more affordable for low-income and rural Vermonters by lessening dependence on imported, polluting and expensive fossil fuels. |

Time is of the essence. The TCI is equitable and will take into consideration the frontlines communities in Vermont. It is fair to the fossil fuel companies who will transition to a Cap and Invest program gradually. It allows Vermont to be part of a regional initiative with other NE states and by doing so, will receive monies to help those who most need it. I say "yes" to the TCI.

Our rent is easily at least 900 a month one bedroom and most of the time thats not including any utilities. Unlike a good amount of states we HAVE to have heat in the winter which we HAVE to pay for. We HAVE to have inspection stickers unlike a good amount of states, we need to take care of insurances, groceries, etc. And now you want us to pay more for gas too? We already have to pay so much just to lay our heads on a pillow at night, most of us over here have way overdue bills or no food but let's just raise the gas prices right???? We are already financially struggling enough over here. I am totally on board with changing stuff and helping our planet it is our only one, but dont punish people who already can barely get by. |

The TCI can play a critical role in combating global warming caused by excess carbon emissions. According to the EPA, Transportation as a whole contributes 29% of the planet's Greenhouse gas emissions. Mainers would happily use cleaner public transportation (hybrid electric or electric, or even trains which take cars off the road) if there were more routes available and high quality service (ie. schedule punctuality and ride frequency). The new vehicles are expensive compared to diesel buses for example, but that's only because diesel bus prices are offset by the FTA's paying 80% of a bus's purchase price! If the TCI offered comparable incentivizing subsidies, polluting vehicles would be soon replaced. Further savings would come from not having to purchase as much fuel.
Solar, hydropower and wind energy would produce the electricity to charge the buses.Maine has much to offer from these particular forms of energy. "Bloom energy boxes" (methane/electrolyte hybrids) could be used as batteries to store what is typically considered "unstorable" energy from these sources. New England would see the rise in employment for engineers, energy specialists and installers, and electricians- Vocational tech schools should get funding for new classes to raise a new generations of such skilled laborers. Which advertising, technical college classes would grow and produce a highly productive work force. All this from a Transportation and Climate Initiative!
In sum, I highly encourage anyone reading this note to support the TCI - it's good for the economy, it's good for the planet and it's good for all of us. |

Thankfully there are model cities and regions around the world that can provide our region ideas. Because these model city ideas also provide a measurable track record to learn from. No need to start from scratch. The clock has been ticking for decades. We have already waited too long because of our national addiction to fossil fuels. It is in the best interest of all of us to adopt fossil-free plans NOW. |

It appears to me that technology provides many opportunities to use non-polluting transportation alternatives. I believe the government must invest first in renewable energy sources like wind and solar to generate electric power and provide incentives for individuals and businesses to switch to vehicles powered by electricity from renewable sources. Investment must also be made in developing charging stations so that people and businesses can viably switch to electric vehicles. Secondly, investment is needed in mass transit, especially inter-city rail and commuter rail. Why is it that other nations can run efficient rail systems and the U.S. cannot?
I live in NYC and I see how ride hail services like Uber and Lyft have created more pollution and more traffic congestion. People in NYC and other major areas would be more likely to NOT use these services if other alternatives were more reliable. Also, I am 71 years old and have used my bicycle for most of my city transportation for the past 50 years when I moved to Manhattan. More people would use bikes or scooters if it was safer to do so. There is little enforcement of traffic regulations in NYC, which does nothing to prevent motorized bikes from using protected bIke lanes. I have no problem with electronic bicycles but as motorized vehicles they need to be licensed and regulated in order to protect those who ride them as well as the pedestrians and pedal bikers who are at risk from people who use electronic bikes irresponsibly.
In short, technology and science have provided the answers to these problems. What is lacking is political will. |
