I fully appreciate how hard it will be for small towns to meet the energy goal that Vermont has affirmed: each town needs to be powered by 90% renewable energy from within its borders by 2050. The Transportation and Climate Initiative as one of the many actions needed to make that goal possible. |

This will be pouring more money down a rat hole. As a scientist, I have serious questions about the whole global warming theory. We all agree that the earth is warming. The question is man responsible? There is plenty of scientific dissent to the theory, but the dissenting voices are suppressed by the media, who no longer feel the need to give light to ideas that contradict their political orthodoxy. Science is not science when it is politicized. The promoters of this theory would have everyone believe that all scientists agree that CO2 is the cause of global warming. In science, there is almost never complete consensus on anything. |

The TCI will be paid for by working families and small businesses across Massachusetts in the form of a gas tax. The current proposal could see an additional five to 17 cents per gallon, and these costs will be passed down to consumers in more ways than one. Not only will it cost more to fill the gas tank, run errands, and pick up the kids from school, businesses will be forced to raise the prices of goods to cover the cost of this proposal.
In addition, living in a part of Massachusetts close to New Hampshire, consumers will take their money across the border. Instead of buying their gas in Massachusetts, consumers will go to New Hampshire (who has already opted out of this proposal) to buy gas, as well as other goods like groceries and lottery tickets, that they would usually buy in Massachusetts.
Despite its good intentions, the TCI’s effect on reducing carbon emissions will be marginal. Carbon emissions are already expected to fall in the next decade by at most 19%. The TCI will only see a reduction in carbon emissions between 1-6%.
Before imposing this new tax, the proposal should come for a vote before the legislature. Unilaterally levying a gas tax is not just bad practice, it’s bad policy. Massachusetts needs to take a hard look at the TCI before saddling Massachusetts families and businesses with new taxes. |

"Earmarks"? There is no such thing in this state, only the next black hole to pour our money into. Next, if it's such a great initiative, why are adjoining states fleeing from it like rats on a sinking ship? Third: Where will its appetite end? First, it's 17 cents, then a quarter, then...California here we come! If the state really wanted to affect climate change by enhancing public transportation, it would create a public transportation system that actually works consistently and efficiently, is accessible to citizens, and is reasonably priced. So far, every "initiative" has turned into a boondoggle...but a very lucrative one for the state's wallet. Please stop treating us as if we are so stupefied by letting you get away with your countless past indulgences that you think this is just another folder of b.s. you can slip under our door in the middle of the night. |

No one person or body should be allowed to unilaterally increase taxes (and this is a TAX) in this democratic system. Increased costs to all things "fossil," whether personally used or consumed by delivery to home or store? And at what benefit? Barely any...if any at all. How crazy is it that it took a private organization, TrainRiders Northeast, to bring Amtrak to Portland and Brunswick? Why isn't state government supporting this highly successful effort and expanding the concept? In my own memory we had rail service all over the state, with connections to Canadian rail.
Instead of tearing up tracks - even for good causes like "rail trails," we should be restoring rail transportation. Private cars, even electric ones, are really a curse. Private cards are dangerous, highly polluting, anti-social, obviously inefficient (hauling a ton of steel and plastic to carry in most cases one person). We need to wean ourselves off them. Let's create local bus systems that can connect with train stations, buses that could pick up and drop off passengers where needed. We already have some of this. RAMP IT UP. |

As far as I know, we have received the necessary approvals. What we need now is money. It would provide many of the local residents a way to get to work, go to the local downtowns, which are located along the track and of course recreation. We have nothing like this in Northeastern Bergen County and is would alleviate some congestion on the local roads. |

Mainers deserve creative new choices and new investments to meet our transportation needs; the one thing we know is that pouring pollution into the atmosphere and sending our hard-earned money out of state for the oil that causes that pollution are NOT the way forward.
Maine needs an ambitious plan to reduce climate-changing transportation pollution,. Working together with neighboring states makes sense.
Maine can see significant economic, health, and environmental benefits by transitioning to cleaner and more efficient transportation options through adoption of TCI. |
