High levels of carbon... read more Transportation is the leading cause of harmful climate change that we are experiencing now with fire storms in California, more severe hurricanes, and rising sea levels. High levels of carbon dioxide in the air are entering the world's oceans, disrupting life there. As greenhouse gas levels rise to levels never before experienced during the time that humans existed, reputable scientists predict that the world will become hotter and less livable. This is all happening at a time when we humans depend even more on nature to provide the conditions to grow our food and just let us survive. This affects people in the developing world - who tend to live in hotter climates to begin with - even more than us. When conditions become unbearable, they migrate.
As Greta Thurnberg clearly states it's immoral to leave our children and future generations a world severely harmed by global climate change.
Since the cost of clean energy is now less than the cost of fossil fuels, there is no reason not to act.
In the realm of transportation, the solutions are electrification (using electricity from solar and other clean sources) of vehicles and at the same time less reliance on driving alone as our primary form of transportation. Alternatives include walking, bicycling, transit, and car-pooling.
When we reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, reductions in health-harming emissions of sulfur and oxides nitrogen decrease. These and volatile organic compounds (e.g., gasoline) plus sunlight are precursors to low-level ozone which also causes disease, disability, and death.
To realize a better future, governments should promote and build infrastructure that encourages walking, bicycling, and transit use and avoid adding more miles of motor vehicle lanes.
The Transportation and Climate Initiative is a great first steps toward addressing the severe problems of climate change and unhealthy air. |

First, the government(s) should not be in the business of choosing winners and losers in the marketplace with the use of taxes, rebates, tax incentives, or any other artificial economic drivers. Let the marketplace function freely, and the most efficient and fair solutions will arise free of government interference, which has proven to be a poor substitute for the market time and time again.
Second, the need for infrastructure improvements and repairs (long lived assets) can be financed with long term bonds when we are in a very attractive borrowing cycle, but only if needed. This at least matches the asset life with the debt duration.
Third, Maine's budget is long on spending on "soft" programs to the detriment of hard spending. That reflects a fundamental difference that needs bi-partisan cooperation to solve, the likes of which we've not seen from Mills, Jackson, Gideon.
Fourth, Maine has some of the highest rates of overall taxation in the entire USA, while not representing any particular reason for that excessive spending. Perhaps Maine needs to review overall finances in a comprehensive manner.
Fifth, taxes should be direct, at the pump, and honest. This is neither. If you want to encourage conservative, a pump tax will have a subtle, direct effect. Not one I agree with, but it is honest.

America is clearly falling far behind... read more It's imperative that America's states and nation need to begin the development of far more environmentally responsible transportation alternatives. America is clearly falling far behind many other similar industrialized nations in the world in this respect; that's especially true for long-haul mass transit. America's high-speed rail system is archaic compared to that of most countries in Europe and Asia. Americans should not be flying between cities that are 1,000 miles or so distant from each other. Given all the delays associated with flying, high speed rail would likely get New Yorkers to Chicago sooner by rail than flying and potentially at much less cost and environmental impact. And like Europe, America should be creating cities that are essentially traffic free. And all this should be accomplished utilizing non fossil fuel burning vehicles as any efforts at improving our nation is doomed in the long term if something isn't done soon to reverse the impacts of global warming. And with respect to Global Warming, I question whether scientists are considering the fact that by humans simply wrapping the world in black asphalt roads and parking lots which hold and retain heat since the early 1900s; along with having built tens of thousands of cities with large buildings which also retain heat; all of which has made it harder for earth to return to the latent overnight temperatures of pre industria- age values, isn't also contributing to global warming; and that something needs to be done soon to reduce the heat retaining effects of our roads, bridges, large buildings and other structures whose retained heat has served to gradually increase earth's daytime temperatures because the latent temperatures in the morning have gradually in and of themselves been rising. It just seems common sense that if we started with an essentially prestine world almost devoid of large buildings and roads at the end of the 1800s and since then have added millions of heat retaining structures (roads, bridges, buildings, etc) not to mention heat spewing factories, large ocean liners, etc., that just these structures and other heat retaining/spewing objects that their presence alone would gradually cause the atmosphere's latent temperature to rise over time - forgetting all about the increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. |

I am Not in favor of the Transportation Climate Initiative as it sets out a framework that imposes an unfair burden on all vehicle owners and thousands of businesses including my own.There have only been a handful of solicitations for feedback. No one knows the full detail of this proposal. The claims for a positive environmental impact have not been proven. This proposal places the burden of new taxes in a disproportionate way onto the poor and rural communities. |

I request that the State of New York formally join the plan to reduce emissions.
I support a policy that has a strong component of equity by prioritizing clean investments in areas overburdened by pollution and/or for those who don't have access.
I am appreciative for the bipartisan nature of this project, moving us forward while the federal government takes us backward.
