That means it's time to totally reimagine the way that we transport people and goods.
The states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and the city of Washington, D.C., are working on a groundbreaking policy to modernize the transportation sector under the Transportation and Climate Initiative. As current residents of Pennsylvania, and expecting to be residing in Virginia by summer 2020, the issues of improving the regional updates and improvements of our transportation systems and options in this area directly concerns us.
In order for this regional plan to work, governors of these states and the mayor of Washington, D.C., must ensure that this transportation plan is bold enough to cut harmful transportation pollution at the scale needed to avert the climate crisis. We need a plan that holds large transportation polluters accountable for the pollution they create and invests in clean transportation solutions including:
More public transit and electric vehicle infrastructure in rural areas
Expansion of commuter rail, electric vehicles, and streets in the suburbs that are safe, walkable, and bikeable
Sustainable and equitable housing near transit and electric bus fleets in urban communities
We want you to know that we are among the citizens who want to see a bold and ambitious plan to cut transportation pollution in their state and in the region.
Thank you for your receiving and hearing our concern. Please do work on transportation options to cut pollution and protect our enviornment in our region! |

Transportation is the greatest polluter in America. Electric autos, trucks and busses are developed and tested enough to be safe and economical. It makes sense to make this change to protect the health of citizens. And now, in the late stages of the climate crisis that fossil fuels have created, we must move swiftly. It is urgent that anything and everything we are capable of doing should be done. This initiative will accomplish great strides to reduce climate warming and help our planet livable for future generations. Please approve. |

Based on proven science and more than ten years of experience with a policy that has helped many eastern states cut power plant pollution and invest in clean energy, the TCI lays out a plan to rebuild and modernize Pennsylvania's transportation systems while reducing emissions of deadly greenhouse gases. The TCI calls for improved public transportation in rural, suburban and urban areas by developing a modern and more resilient transportation structure that would enable Pennsylvania citizens to get around safely and efficiently. Tens of thousands of good jobs would be created, helping to fuel strong, 21st century economic growth. Carbon pollution should be reduced by 25% over the next 12 years. Medical research indicates that public health benefits by 2032 would include reduced asthma attacks, 1,000 fewer premature deaths per year, and $10 billion savings annually in reduced medical bills and other public health benefits. Tragically, fossil fuel proponents have launched a major campaign to oppose this enormously important initiative. Please resist this effort to keep Pennsylvanians mired in dirty air, rising temperatures, bad transportation systems and poor health for decades to come. |

With that in mind, I urge all parties to commit to bold climate action plans. Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement, all of them speak the need for drastic actions to reach our goals. No matter what happens with the federal government, these are targets/goals we should strive to. You have already taken the first step by coming together as regional states to acknowledge the need, and to work on making a change.
Sharing something that has touched my life... I having lived in NYC, and in Bethlehem PA, I could always see the benefit of a commuter rail line along the I-78 or I-80 corridor. So many people live in PA, and commute to NYC for work. It has always been a rumor, but has it actually been considered? That is exactly where you guys come in! PA, NY, & NJ!
Thanks for doing something!!!!

The transportation sector has perhaps the greatest potential for transformation in the wake of climate change, in ways that can decrease emissions and increase connectivity. In Philadelphia, while I applaud the heterogeneous integration of bus, trolley, elevated train, and regional rail systems, much more investment is needed to increase reliability and service range. Moreover, given our placement at the nexus of the New Jersey-Pennsylvania-Delaware tri-state area, the city is ripe for increasing the means, convenience, and affordability of transportation. Finally, it is an embarrassment that it is easier for a Philadelphia resident without a vehicle to travel to New York City--two states away--than it is to travel within Pennsylvania. These forms of investment can work in concert to build a more sustainable and connected Pennsylvania and Northeast Corridor. Thank you for your consideration. |

Objective science increasingly demonstrates that greenhouse gases (from transportation, energy and agriculture) are contributing to record-breaking climate instability (e.g., extreme weather events, droughts, wildfires, flooding, rising sea levels, animal species extinction, etc.).
Currently, transportation is the primary source of climate pollution in the U.S.
Fortunately, many eastern states are attempting to comply with the transportation sector of the Transportation and Climate Initiative (TCI).
For the TCI to be viable, these states’ governors (and the mayor of Washington, D.C.) must ensure that this plan is robust enough to curb greenhouse gas pollution from transportation, thereby helping to avert climate chaos.
Large transportation polluters need to be held accountable for the atmospheric fouling they create. Also, municipalities within states must invest in clean transportation.
More specifically, all-electric mass transit -- and electric vehicle charging stations -- must become ubiquitous, starting in urban areas, and eventually in rural areas. Also, there must be an increase of suburban streets which are safe for walking and bicycling. Additionally, “green” housing should be ubiquitous near urban mass transit centers.
Thank you for your consideration on my comments.
Sincerely, |
