I do not support Governor Baker's plan to impose a stealth gas tax hike by his executive order through the Transportation Climate Initiative. We Bay Staters do not need a faceless bureaucracy in some distant state imposing at will what unelected bureaucrats alone deem is appropriate. Massachusetts has one of the highest cost-of-living standards in the nation, along with already some of the highest energy costs. Please reject TCI. Don't make Massachusetts even less affordable, especially for such little gain.
Having actively campaigned for him in his original bid for office, I’ve become extremely disappointed in his pursuit of taxation. TCI is much worse in that unelected bureaucrats would arbitrarily have the ability to raise our taxes. Taxes should ONLY be raised through the legislature.
The governor needs to reign in his belief that he alone can enter our state into any, multi-state agreement.

Massachusetts already has a very high cost-of-living along with some of the highest (clean) energy costs in the nation.

There is more an more evidence accumulating day by day, week by week in the form violent, historic storms, fires, loss of species and forested land, melting of our polar ice caps. etc. In addition, the majority of scientists who research matters related to climate change are in agreement that there has been a precipitous increase in the rate of climate change since the beginning of the industrial age and particularly since the middle of the 20th century, due to man made CO2 emissions. It is estimated we have about 10 years to turn this trend back or we face potentially irreversible global warming and disastrous effects to plant and animal life, and therefore, human life. We need a dramatic reduction in the emissions produced by private, public and commercial transportation. |

When implemented, the TCI promises to be an effective tool.
Since it uses market signals to drive the shift to cleaner energy, and leaves the market to choose the solutions, TCI should be a program that everyone can back.
The projected estimates in gas price increases that I have seen and that seem to be drawing a lot of complaints are not even significant when viewed in the context of normal fluctuations in gas prices.

As a resident of Massachusetts and a U.S. citizen who is extremely concerned about the challenge to survival climate change poses, I fully support and am excited by the Transportation and Climate... read more As a resident of Massachusetts and a U.S. citizen who is extremely concerned about the challenge to survival climate change poses, I fully support and am excited by the Transportation and Climate Initiative, which I understand involves the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and the city of Washington, D.C.. We desperately need to modernize transportation systems and do so in a way that not only avoids making the environmental crisis worse, but actually helps to clean up the present "swamp."
To that end, governors of the states mentined and the mayor of Washington, D.C., must ensure that this transportation plan is bold enough to cut harmful transportation pollution at the scale needed to avert the climate crisis. We need a plan that holds large transportation polluters accountable for the pollution they create and invests in clean transportation solutions including:
More public transit and electric vehicle infrastructure in rural areas.
Expansion of commuter rail, electric vehicles, and streets in the suburbs that are safe, walkable, and bikeable.
Sustainable and equitable housing near transit and electric bus fleets in urban communities.
