We need a plan that holds large transportation polluters accountable for the pollution they create and invests in clean transportation solutions including:
More public transit and electric vehicle infrastructure in rural areas
Expansion of commuter rail, electric vehicles, and streets in the suburbs that are safe, walkable, and bikeable
Sustainable and equitable housing near transit and electric bus fleets in urban communities

Private transportation contributes inordinately large amounts of CO2 to climate change. This needs to be curtailed. You must make significant investments in public transportation and infrastructure support for biking and walking. Carbon emissions must be reduced - please raise this to among your highest priorities.

Half measures are NOT enough. We should be adding charging stations for electric cars and trucks, electrifying our buses and railroads so they don't pollute in cities and can be powered by electricity from renewable energy. This is not a time for incrementalism, it's a time for big, bold measures. |

I am encouraged and excited that there is a regional and bipartisan effort to deal with this issue. My particular interest is to replace diesel buses with electric ones, especially school buses. Here, in western Massachusetts, where public transportation is relatively scarce ( a whole other issue), having diesel school buses pouring particulates as well as CO2 into the atmosphere and into kids lungs is truly undesirable, as the forests of this area should be a major source of clean oxygen locally and for the larger region as well. In addition, funds are desperately needed to increase clean public transportation here. Clean trains and buses are needed for both urban and rural populations as well as electric charging stations along roadways and in urban housing districts. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts should join the twelve state Transportation and Climate Initiative with the intention of swiftly acting to reduce the burning of fossil fuels and biomass in this region of our nation. |

Use of fossil fuels must plummet if we are to prevent the worst effects of global warming.
We need more charging stations if electric autos are ever to become mainstream. We need electric school buses and city buses to clean up the air our citizens breath every day and reduce noise in our communities. We need better rapid transit if we're ever going to reduce the traffic in bigger cities and help their centers thrive and prosper. It's especially important for our children's health now and as adults.
We should look at electrifying most or all rail lines. Again, it would mean cleaner air and quieter trains. Another big benefit is the electricity can come from green sources, as quickly as they can be brought online. Trains powered by electricity are the norm in Europe and Japan, and there were many here in the US about a century ago, for example in the northern Rockies. We made a poor choice when we switched to diesels, although it seemed to make economic sense at the time.
Thank you for your consideration. |
